SUNDAY 27th MAY, 2012

...'One Sunday in May'

Sunday the 27th of May 2012, sees the culmination of planning between the community group Barmouth Music Workshop & the Min y Mor Hotel, & the advent of a one day jazz festival at the hotel on the promenade in Barmouth, Mid Wales.

Music will feature four bands, between the times of 1.00pm and 11.30pm. The bar at the hotel will be open, selling a range of beers & wines, with sandwiches & meals available all day & evening, at reasonable prices.

The festival will be held indoors in the lower hall at the rear of the hotel, so that the weather will not be a governing factor in the organisation of the event. The hotel, however, is situated a stone's throw from the beach, with tables on the front lawn, so that anyone wishing to do so, can enjoy a drink in the sunshine, during breaks from the music. (Weather permitting!)

As a taster of things to come, at 7.30 pm on Friday night, guitarist Andy Mackenzie will lead a four man outfit in the Arts Room at the Dragon Theatre, consisting of himself and Remi Harris on guitar, Ben Holder on violin, and Greg Robley on bass. The music will be Hot Club de France, with a contemporary flavour. This combination of talent & youth needs to be heard to be believed.

Sunday 1.00-3.00pm at the Min y Mor, will see an exciting kick off of similar music, but with a different line up. This time, local premier violinist Billy Thompson will be featured, with award winning musician Huw Warren on accordion. With them will be Andy Mackenzie on guitar, Eryl Jones on vocals, mandolin and guitar, Phil Gardiner on rhythm guitar, and Greg Robley on bass.

3.30-5.30pm, and Mellow Baku, vocalist, will take the stage, together with Ray Butcher on trumpet. Huw Warren will be on his more usual keyboard, with Huw Vaughan Williams on double bass, and Miles Levin on drums. A truly classy line up, with thrills in store.

From 7.00-9.00pm, following the early evening break, we will see the 16 piece Gwynedd & Anglesey Youth Jazz Orchestra making a welcome return to Barmouth, under Huw Warren's guidance. The cream on the cake will be that Byron Wallen, legendary contemporary trumpet player, will be travelling up from London, to feature with the youngsters. He and Huw will also be performing as a duo, prior to the main orchestra.

...And then...9.30 to 11.30pm, party time! Banda Bacana from the North Wales Sunshine Coast, will be getting us all on our feet with some funky Afro Cuban grooves, to finish the night.

...A day of music to be remembered...'One Sunday in May'.
