| Music
started about 9pm with Mark (guitar and vocal) Roy Ellis (Bass) John
Redpath (drums) and Barry (keys) playing a blues, Chris Rea's road to Hell
and Eric Clapton's Lay down Sally. I hadn't heard Mark sing and play
electric guitar since before his illness, and had forgotten what a
powerful, bluesey voice he has, and his guitar playing, well, please play
the video. OK the ending is rough, but its a jam session, what
do you expect? Roy and John play well together and provide a tight
rhythm section. John has played drums for artists as varied as
Screaming Lord Sutch and the New Seekers. We
were followed onstage by Exit, three young girls with Rob of BMEX playing
drums. One of the many young bands nurtured by BMEX. A breath
of fresh air after us "Old Bastards" Odessa is from
Canada but now lives in Bala. Her son is in the band Soul Explosive.
Odessa played bass and sang "Stormy Monday Blues" and then "Summertime"
with my old partner from the Stone Cookies, Paul on harmonica.
These two are both accomplished artists. Paul once came fourth in
the UK harmonica championships. Bla bla bla.........
Seriously though, I believe that something of a musical revolution is going on around Barmouth. This new venture by Mark and the Buffs is part of it. Next one will be Friday 7 March then every first Friday of the month.
Sorry I haven't mentioned everybody, but thanks to everyone involved. Please email for more information, or if you would like to add anything to this brief review. |
